Currently we are reading the book "Hedi". The author is Johanna Spyri. She was from Hirzel, Switzerland. Her first novel was "A Leaf on Vryony's Grave". "Hedi" was written in 1884. Her first movie with sound was made in 1937. Since then their has been 12 movies or television shows.
Her father was a country doctor and her mother a daughter of a pasture. She had 3 brothers and 3 sisters. At the age of 16 she was sent to a upper class French school. At the age of 25 she got married to a lawyer and journalist. A friend helped make Spyri to write. She had only one son and he died at an early age. At first Spyri didn't want to publish her works but she soon changed her thoughts. "Hedi" is a world wide success. She wrote a total of 27 books and 4 booklets. She died in Zurich on July 7, 1901.
